The Challenge
Citizen science done right is a beautiful thing. It crowdsources the scientific enterprise, transforming citizens young and old into researchers. The end result is an all-around win. Participants see their world in a new way while compiling data to answer the thorny scientific questions of our time.

The National Audubon Society – pioneers in the field of citizen science – wanted to test its limits and asked us to help. Could we activate a citizen network to help answer intractable questions about climate change? They wanted to know: is climate change altering the delicate timing between hummingbird migration and the blooming of flowers they rely on for food?

The Solution
We worked with Audubon from the ground level to envision, design, and build a series of user friendly data collection platforms. The result was a modern approach to engage the public in science. Web and mobile applications with compelling visuals provided a seamless way to log and submit data from many devices. Interactive maps closed the loop, bringing synthesized information back to the participants who made the new insights possible.

THE MOBILE APPS

We designed and built apps for both iOS and Android platforms, transforming mobile devices into sophisticated data collection tools. Users can conduct one of several survey types, allowing them to easily collect and transmit data valuable to Audubon scientists. Lists of hummingbird and flower species presented to the viewer in the surveys are geo-specific and filtered based on the user’s location, reducing errors and improving user experience.

THE WEBSITE

In addition to the mobile apps, users can submit data via a website with a modern design. Interactive maps transmit information back to participants, allowing them to browse and filter data collected by citizen scientists from across the country.

SPREADING THE WORD

A promo video for the program has been watched by hundreds of thousands of viewers, successfully recruiting new citizen scientists. We also produced a tutorial video to facilitate on-boarding to the program and reduce user error.
