The Challenge
The Natural Capital Project does highly technical work, combining economics and environmental science to create new ways to solve the thoniest environmental problems of our time. Complex computer models? No problem. Remote sensing of ecosystem services? They’re on it. But for this group of nerds, answering the question ‘what is it you do?’ in way that the rest of us could understand was the hard part. They needed to hone their communication strategy and decided to start by redesigning their outdated website.

The Solution
We worked together from the ground up, unearthing a clear message around NatCap’s organizational purpose, modernizing their visuals, and developing a responsive website that optimizes viewer experience across a wide range of devices. The design challenge was to streamline a labyrinthine collection of web pages into a clean user experience that worked for both newcomers and their loyal collaborators. Pleased with the outcome, NatCap asked us to design a suite of print materials and a master infographic for their international symposium attended by global business and government leaders.

“I LOVE WHAT CARAVAN LAB HAS BROUGHT TO OUR COMMUNICATIONS…FROM ILLUMINATING BOTH THE HEARTS AND BRAINS OF OUR STORYTELLERS, TO STREAMLINING OUR WEB PRESENCE, OUR SOLUTIONS ARE MORE CLEARLY EMERGING IN GLOBAL DISCUSSIONS THANKS TO THEIR HELP”

-Mary Rukelshaus, The Natural Capital Project

THE WEBSITE

NatCap’s new website needed to speak to a lay audience unversed in the nuance of natural capital, without turning off veteran collaborators that regularly used the website as a resource. We simplified the click-heavy original website and created scrolling pages in a way that was organized but still visually engaging.

THE PRINT MATERIALS

Happy with the final design for the website, NatCap asked us to make a suite of print materials using a complementary design for their biggest event of the year. We kept simplicity in mind for the print designs, using a clean look with bold colors to draw interest without distracting.

INFOGRAPHIC DESIGN

NatCap wanted a single infographic that could capture their landscape-based approach for valuing ecosystem services. It was important to have an easy-to-digest but comprehensive graphic that engages potential collaborators in multiple sectors, from academia to Fortune 500 companies. We opted to design a vivid landscape image that piques interest while emphasizing the breadth of NatCap’s work.
