The Challenge
Scientists often work outside the public eye, hunkered down in labs or at field sites. But this lack of visibility can make what they do seem mysterious or unrelatable to everyone else, and leaves young students without an understanding of what it is like to actually do science in the real world.
The Solution
Together with Dr. Katie Wagner at the University of Wyoming, we created a short film that gives a glimpse into the the life and motivations of an evolutionary biologist. Katie talks about her beginnings — what originally spurred her onto a scientific career path and why she loves what she does. The end result showcases a young and relatable science role model that can make middle school students think “hey, I could do that too”.

This short film was part of a grant from the National Science Foundation and will be used in middle school classrooms to give students a sense of what it’s like to be a scientist.
