A movement to revitalize cities while reducing pollution.

Overview

De-paving paradise.

Web Design & Development, Film Production, Branding & Identity

Much of the water pollution found near cities is caused by pavement. Rain hits the pavement, picks up toxins, and carries them straight into waterways. Depave Puget Sound is a regional movement to remove pavement that isn’t needed anymore, transforming dead areas into new green spaces that revitalize communities while reducing pollution.

Our Approach

Pavement doesn’t have to be forever. Here’s how.

We sought to not only inform our audience, but empower them. We wanted people who had never thought about pry bars to feel confident they could pull off a depave project. We did this by planting personal and relatable success stories throughout the how-to information, along with photos of local people working together to remove dead pavement with their own hands.

Challenges

Make it
do-able.

Removing pavement and starting over with a new vision is work intensive. We wanted it to feel less intimidating and more do-able. Distilling the process into bite-size elements helped demystify it. Short videos relating personal stories along with generous use of white space helped get the tone right.

Features

Information rich, intimidation poor.

A new logo and branding gave the Depave movement a fresh and modern look. An extensive amount of research was required to boil down the depave process into a guide that was streamlined and unintimidating. We also designed a condensed version of the guide that could be printed and taken to work sites.
